Debris of missing F-35 located, US Marine Corps grounds all flights
On 17 September 2023, a USMC F-35B fighter jet went missing in South Carolina after the pilot was forced to eject from the aircraft. The F-35 was reportedly set on autopilot when the pilot ejected, meaning that the stealth fighter continued to fly until it exhausted its fuel supply. Consequently, the US military sought public assistance to locate the aircraft. Late on 18 September 2023, Joint Base Charleston in South Carolina announced that personnel from the base and from Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, in close coordination with local authorities, had successfully located a debris field in Williamsburg County. The discovery of the wreckage, approximately 70 miles (112 kilometres) northeast of Joint Base Charleston, prompted efforts to secure and investigate the crash site.

SAPS pilots qualify for tailwheel endorsement
On Friday I was invited by Rainbow SkyReach at Springs airfield to attend the certificate ceremony for ten South African Police Services (SAPS) pilots who had recently completed their tailwheel training with Andy Kaspersen at Petit airfield. All ten pilots already have their commercial licences and are involved in further training on several different aircraft types that the SAPS operate. The idea of a tailwheel rating was undertaken on the nimble BushCat Rotax powered aircraft to prepare them to fly the much larger and heavier Pilatus Porter the SAPS operate. More on this exciting aspect of flight training in the October edition of African Pilot.

**Octans Cygnus prototype flies to LABACE **
Octans Aircraft brought its five-seat prototype piston single Cygnus to LABACE and the company has applied for Brazilian ANAC certification of the airplane. Having exhibited at LABACE 2019, Brazil-based Octans at the time promised to return to LABACE with certification plans for Cygnus. Prototype 001 arrived at Congonhas Airport for LABACE 2023 under its own power, flown from Octans’s upstate São João da Boa Vista factory by two pilots. The trip added more time to the prototype’s already logged 100 flight-test hours.

Saturday spent at Orient airfield
On Saturday morning Bjorn and I travelled to the Magalies Gliding Club at Orient airfield to film and interview Cassie del Laroche (99) who was flown by Andreas Siebold in his Diamond HK36 Dimona motor glider. This was a really ‘good news’ story since many years previously Mrs del Laroche was a private pilot where she undertook her training in Zambia’s Copperbelt. What a pleasure it was to meet with Cassie as she told us about her flying life and more. Andreas told us that she even took the controls for part of the flight and performed turns, climbs and descends perfectly. Cessna SkyCourier achieves Brazilian type certific

Cessna SkyCourier achieves Brazilian type certification
At LABACE 2023 Textron Aviation announced that Cessna’s SkyCourier utility turboprop twin has achieved type certification from the National Civil Aviation Authority of Brazil (ANAC). The approval allows for its operation in the expansive Brazilian market for regional, utility and special-mission aircraft.

Rand Airshow 2023

When a plan comes together and the success is a ride in an aircraft for the very first time for more than 500 disadvantaged children this is the result of outstanding teamwork and Felix Gosher is the person who planned yet another successful Children’s Flight at Orient airfield on Friday. Felix has the amazing ability to bring so many diverse people together, each with their own responsibilities all directed to the single purpose of delivering an amazing party for the children, complete with gifts, food, cold drinks and a host of other experiences that will live with them forever. From the sponsors AVBOB who constructed the scaffolding air traffic control tower from where the ATC’s Ali Semono (Lanseria Tower) and Ricardo Afonso (Rand Tower) worked all day, to the pilots who brought their aircraft and helicopters and all the officials who made this a very safe day I would like to express my gratitude to each and every one of you. Felix told me that there were 109 aircraft and helicopters that took part in this event.Also thanks to Hot FM 94.7 and Brian Emmenis of Capital Sounds for your music and announcements throughout the day. EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023 (Part One)

African Pilot attended the final SAPFA Speed Rally for this year that attracted 20 entries. The day was sunny with fine weather and only a slight breeze from the north-west, but rather hazy due to the many veld fires that are burning at this time of the year. On arrival the airfield had been superbly prepared by the Groblersdal Vlieg Klub with a large Bedouin tent with tales and chairs so that visitors could keep out of the late winter sun. As always, the club had a superb kitchen set up in one of the hangars for delicious breakfasts and rolls for the duration of the day. Another hangar was used for the pub, whilst the centre hangar was used for the Speed Rally briefing complete with sponsors banners, a data projector and screen for the briefing part of the early morning event.As always Nigel Musgrave gave up his Saturday to be the overall safety officer as well as assisting the organisers with the rally management. David Le Roux from Pilot Insure has taken charge of the Speed Rally series and by all accounts his various presentations and recognition of the sponsors is widely appreciated. On Saturday morning (12 August) Bjorn and I travelled to the Magalies Gliding Club at Orient airfield to film and interview Cassie del Laroche (99) who was flown by Andreas Siebold in his Diamond HK36 Dimona motor glider. This was a really ‘good news’ story since many years previously Mrs del Laroche was a private pilot where she undertook her training in Zambia’s Copperbelt.
