Japan grounds its V-22 Ospreys Last week Japan too Japan grounds its V-22 Ospreys
Last week Japan took the extraordinary step of asking the US to ground its V-22 Osprey fleet, a day after one of the American tiltrotors assigned to a special operations wing crashed off the Japanese coast, reportedly killing at least one of eight on board. Japan, which grounded its own Osprey fleet, asked for a halt of all non-emergency American V-22 flights over its territory until ‘their safety is confirmed,’ with the request coming from Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokzu Matsuno, one of Japan’s highest officials. A senior defence ministry official, Taro Yamato, told a hearing at the Japanese Diet today that Japan plans to suspend flights of its 14 aircraft temporarily. A planned training flight Thursday at the Metabaru army camp in southern Japan, for instance, had already been cancelled.

SpaceX’s Starship reaches space for first time b SpaceX’s Starship reaches space for first time but explodes moments laterSpaceX’s uncrewed spacecraft Starship, developed to carry astronauts to the moon and beyond, reached space for the first time on Saturday but was presumed to have failed minutes later. This was Starship’s second test after its first attempt to reach space ended in an explosion earlier this year. The two-stage rocket ship blasted off from the Elon Musk-owned company’s Starbase launch site near Boca Chica in Texas, east of Brownsville, on a planned 90-minute uncrewed flight into space. If successful, the rocket would have ended up landing in the Pacific ocean near Hawaii. The company hopes the rocket can eventually manage a trip around the Earth, which could take an hour and a half.

Boeing sees large airline fleet growth from Middle Boeing sees large airline fleet growth from Middle East
The Middle East airliner fleet will more than double by 2042 with the delivery of 3,025 new jets, according to the latest commercial market outlook (CMO) published by Boeing on Sunday. The airframer predicts that new widebody models, such as the 777-9 it is displaying at the Dubai Airshow this week, will account for almost 1,350 of those sales, along with 1,570 narrowbodies, some 70 purpose-built freighters and just 35 regional jets.

On Friday morning (24 Nov 2023) a Brazilian Air Force C-390 (PT ZNG) arrived at AFB Waterkloof for demonstration flights to the South African Air Force (SAAF) and other government departments as the SAAF investigates future replacement or augmentation of its ageing C-130BZ Hercules fleet. After landing at Waterkloof, the C-390 was met by senior Department of Defence (DoD) leadership, including Chief of the SA National Defence Force (SANDF), General Rudzani Maphwanya; Chief of the SAAF, Lieutenant General Wiseman Mbambo and Chief of the SA Navy, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese. Following a media briefing, the aircraft took off for a demonstration flight with SANDF members and various representatives from government departments. The full feature with photographs and a video will be published in the December edition of African Pilot.Videography & Photography by Athol Franz, visit http://africanpilot.co.za for more info.

The SACAA’s Aviation Industry awards on the evening of Friday 10 November at an exciting new venue known as the Focus Rooms over looking the Modderfontein Reserve. The setup was beautifully decorated with modern finishes and décor, congratulations to the SACAA marketing team. Various dignitaries were present including the Minister of Transport, officials from the Department of Transport and several SACAA board members as well SACAA management personnel. Interestingly the only aviation media persons present were Garth from Flightline Weekly and African Pilot. Although there were 16 categories, FlySafair and ExecuJet took most of the awards as runner up of the winner of a particular category. My observation is that many of the excellent aviation businesses did not enter or they did not understand the process of judging according to the rules of the competition.I was particularly pleased with the award presented to Felix Gosher by Ms Poppy Khoza (DCA) for the amazing work he has done of the past few years with both the Children’s Flight as well as the Elders Flight. To all those persons who were involved in both successful events this past year, Felix thanks you because as he said he could not have done this without your amazing assistance. There were several other aviation industry awards including Morningstar Flying Club, to Sling Aircraft and to the research work on ‘Forced Landing into Trees’. I wish to thank Siza from the SACAA’s marketing and communications department for inviting African Pilot to attend the prestigious awards, which will be featured within the December edition of your favourite aviation magazine.Music Credits & Disclaimer:

SACAA Industry Awards 10Nov2023
On Saturday African Pilot was at the Brits airfield where the up-country spot landings were taking place as well as an EAA Chapter 322 breakfast fly-in. As an EAA member I was impressed that the Chapter paid for the breakfasts of all arriving members and the breakfast was delicious. Brits Flying Club has one of the finest clubhouses in this region and the friendship of the club members is wonderful. The runway towards the southern end had been marked up with a metre wide yellow ‘bingo line’ and white lines painted at one metre intervals before and after the main landing spot. After the briefing the seven contestants were divided into two groups of three and four to fly the circuit for three spot landings: 1) Normal powered approach, 2) Power off glide approach from 1000 feet and 3) powered approach over a two-metre obstacle. The same system was used in Stellenbosch which had six pilots enter. Results were as follows:
1) Ron Stirk Brits 95
2) Dale de Klerk Brits 119
3) James Spilsbury Stellenbosch 288
4) Tarryn Myburgh Brits 409
5) Thys van der Merwe Stellenbosch 485
6) Alewyn Burger Stellenbosch 565
7) Mike Blackburn Brits 590
8) Jaco van Zyl Brits 614
9) Jury Steyn Stellenbosch 796
10) Tony Russell Stellenbosch 825
11) Chris Burger Brits 914

SAPFA Brits Spot Landing 28Oct2023
With excellent visibility and relatively minor winds, the Krugersdorp Flying Club (KFC) staged its annual fly-in on Saturday with plenty of entertainment, a scrumptious breakfast and a selection of unique aircraft that can only be found on this airfield. Bjorn travelled with me to assist with the video that we will publish next week as well as within the November edition of African Pilot. It was good to meet up with so many KFC members as well as visitors to the airfield as well as interview them for the magazine. Thanks to the organisers as well as Dale de Klerk who was ever busy marshalling and explaining about several of the colourful unique aircraft that were on display. The Flying Lions arrived with three branded Puma Energy T6 Harvards to take some fortunate passengers for a formation sortie to the west of the airfield. On their final take-off the three Harvards performed a flat display trailing smoke to the delight of the gathered audience. A full feature with a video will be published in the November edition of African Pilot.Videography & Photography by Athol Franz & Björn Bottin, visit http://africanpilot.co.za for more info.

African Pilot attended the talk by Wouter Botes on aircraft accident investigation and the various reasons why these accidents keep happening within South African General Aviation. Wouter’s illustrated talk at the EAA Auditorium at Rand Airport was very well attended. During this past week I edited all eight chapters of Wouter’s next book that will go to the printers this coming week and at this stage almost all the books have been pre-sold. However, if you wish to get your hands on one of his excellent publication, please contact Wouter directly E-mail: planewreckhunter@gmail.comVideography & Photography by Athol Franz & Björn Bottin, visit http://africanpilot.co.za for more info.
